I ran in high school where my best 3 mile time was 16:20. I began running again 2 years ago and am in very good shape. This month, I finished a half marathon in 1 hours, 36 minutes, the Chicago marathon in about 3 hours, 36 minutes, and most recently, a 5k in 19:41. I know I need to break 19 first, but 18 minutes is my goal.

It takes a regular healthy person to run 3 miles between 33-36 minutes. This corresponds to an 11-12 minutes per mile pace or 5.00-5.45 miles per hour on a treadmill. This is a good result for someone who does some regular physical activities and hasn't intentionally prepared for a run.
For women, an 8 minute mile time is a good time for an intermediate or advanced runner, depending on age. Again, we can also use those categories to give a general percentile ranking for your mile performance as well. Mile times in the ā€œintermediateā€ column are better than 50% of age- and sex-matched peers, whereas ā€œadvancedā€ times Mileage automatically improves as a runner's fitness improves over time. 10 miles easy @ 7:00 pace for a 16:00 5K runner is a lot different than 10 miles easy @ 9:30 pace for a 26:00 5K runner. There's a 25 minutes difference in total amount of time spent running and that puts more stress on the slower runner. Running a 5K under 18 minutes means you need to hold under 5:54 mile or 3:36 kilometer pace. So, you have to get that sub 18 5k pace to feel more like a tempo run rather than an all-out effort. I believe a focus on doing longer tempo runs also will help you greatly. The reason being is you are spending longer durations at your anaerobic threshold.

What is a good 5k time for a 60-year-old? Setting your personal goals based on the times of other runners your age is a great way to motivate yourself. The average 5k time for a 60-year-old is about 40 – 45 minutes. Of course, times will vary by fitness level and terrain, but this will give you something to aim for.
